Recognition of qualifications

Description

If you gained your qualifications outside the UK, you may need to demonstrate how they compare with UK qualifications when applying for employment, further study or professional registration. Whether formal recognition is required depends on the organisation you are applying to and the purpose of your application. Many employers and universities assess international qualifications directly, while others may ask for an official comparison from UK ENIC.

Academic qualification recognition

Academic recognition helps employers, universities and other organisations understand how an overseas qualification compares with the education systems of England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland. It does not automatically guarantee admission to a course or employment, as individual organisations set their own entry requirements and make their own decisions.

If you are applying to study in the UK, your chosen university will normally assess whether your qualifications meet its entry requirements. Some institutions may request an independent comparison of your qualifications, while others will rely on their own admissions processes. Similarly, employers may ask for evidence of qualification comparability where they are unfamiliar with qualifications awarded overseas.

UK ENIC

UK ENIC (the UK National Information Centre for the recognition and comparison of international qualifications and skills) is the official UK service for evaluating overseas qualifications. Managed by Ecctis on behalf of the UK Government, UK ENIC provides impartial information and comparison services for individuals, employers, higher education institutions and professional bodies.

The main service for individuals is the Statement of Comparability, which compares recognised international qualifications with the UK education systems. A Statement of Comparability may be requested by employers, universities or professional bodies to help them understand the level of your qualification. It provides an independent comparison but does not guarantee entry to employment or study, and does not confer professional registration. Final decisions always rest with the organisation considering your application.

If you hold a UK qualification and need to explain it when applying overseas, UK ENIC also provides a UK Qualification Reference Statement, which gives detailed information about UK qualifications and their place within the UK education systems.

Professional qualifications

Recognition of academic qualifications is different from recognition of professional qualifications.

Many professions in the UK are regulated by law. If you wish to practise in a regulated profession, you must meet the requirements of the relevant professional regulator, regardless of where your qualification was obtained. Examples of regulated professions include medicine, dentistry, nursing and midwifery, pharmacy, architecture, teaching and several other professions.

Each regulator sets its own requirements, which may include qualification recognition, professional examinations, language requirements or periods of supervised practice. You should contact the appropriate regulator before making plans to work in the UK. GOV.UK provides guidance on recognising professional qualifications and directs applicants to the relevant UK regulator.

Preparing your documents

If you apply for a Statement of Comparability, you will normally need to provide copies of your qualification certificates and academic transcripts. Where documents are not in English, certified translations may also be required. Depending on your circumstances, UK ENIC may ask for proof of identity or other supporting documentation during the assessment process.

Before applying, it is worth checking whether your prospective employer, university or professional regulator actually requires a Statement of Comparability, as many organisations assess qualifications directly.

International recognition frameworks

The UK participates in the Lisbon Recognition Convention, an international agreement that promotes fair, transparent and timely recognition of higher education qualifications across participating countries. The Convention encourages competent authorities to recognise qualifications unless substantial differences can be demonstrated, helping to support international student and researcher mobility. UK ENIC carries out its work within this international framework.

Many countries participating in the European Higher Education Area also follow the Bologna Process, which aims to improve the comparability and transparency of higher education qualifications through common degree structures and quality assurance. Although the UK is no longer a member of the European Union, it remains an active participant in the Bologna Process.

Diploma Supplement

Many higher education institutions issue a Diploma Supplement alongside degree certificates. The Diploma Supplement provides additional information about the qualification, including its level, learning outcomes, content and place within the national education system. It is designed to help employers, universities and recognition bodies understand qualifications awarded in another country and may support applications for employment or further study.

Before you move to the UK

If you are planning to move to the UK for research or employment, it is advisable to:

-check with your prospective employer or university whether they require a Statement of Comparability;

-establish whether your profession is regulated in the UK;

-contact the relevant professional regulator if professional registration is required;

-obtain certified English translations of qualification documents where necessary; and

-allow sufficient time for any recognition or verification processes before your planned start date.
