Understanding how UK academia works can be challenging, particularly for those new to the higher education and research landscape. The UK Young Academy's free Beginner's guide to UK academia aims to demystify the sector by providing accessible, easy-to-navigate information on university structures, governance, academic career pathways, research funding, and the organisations that shape UK research and higher education. Originally developed to support at-risk scholars, the guide has wider relevance for researchers, students, professional services staff, policymakers, and anyone seeking to better understand the UK academic environment.

The guide is written in plain English, requires no prior knowledge, and includes a helpful glossary of common academic terms and acronyms.
