The British Council has launched a prestigious fellowship for women STEM researchers to undertake an Early Academic Fellowship at a leading UK university.

The British Council Women in STEM Early Academic Fellowship is aimed at women from Bangladesh, Cambodia, India, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Nepal, Pakistan, Philippines, Sri Lanka, Thailand and Vietnam who have good levels of English, have recently received their PhD and can demonstrate the need for financial support to continue their research.

The Early Academic Fellowship aims to provide the women with a foundation to launch their careers in higher education and research in their home country and to take a key role in the advocacy of girls and women in STEM in their home country.

Offering a comprehensive package of benefits, including financial support and support for mothers, these Fellowships aim to tackle some of the barriers standing in the way of women pursuing careers in STEM.

Benefits of the scholarships include:

  • Per annum salary plus research expenses
  • Special support for mothers
  • The internationally valued prestige of being a British Council Scholar
  • A foundation to launch a career in higher education and research
  • An opportunity to promote and enhance science and innovation in home countries through exposure to UK expertise in STEM research
  • Building strong and lasting connections with the UK through active engagement in the alumni network

Jen Bardsley, Global Head of Science, British Council said:

“Through our Fellowship scheme, we provide inspirational women the opportunity to launch their research career and make a real and lasting difference to science and innovation.”

“We believe this opportunity will create strong and lasting connections between the UK and the Awardees’ home countries. Together we will work to address the significant challenge of the gender gap in STEM.”
