PhD student position in Experimental Osteoarthritis Research

Department of Orthopedics and Trauma Surgery (Director Orthopedics: Prof. Dr. med. Babak Moradi)

The Research Group in the Department of Orthopedics Trauma Surgery at the University Medical Center, Christian-Albrechts-Universität in Kiel, Germany offers a PhD student position for students with an interest and expertise in cell/molecular biology. Candidates with knowledge in immunology are preferred. The project is related to the topic of implant associated infections and involves the analysis of human samples from the operation theatre as well as cell-culture experiments. The final stage of the project will potentially involve animal experimentation. The group offers intensive training of PhD students in a wide range of laboratory techniques.

We offer:

  • The salary will be paid in accordance with remuneration group 50% of E13 TV-L (Public
  • Sector Collective Agreement).
  • You work 19,25 hours a week on the project, based on a fixed-term contract. The funding is available for three years.

Your tasks:

  • To analyse the inflammatory pathways in implant associated infections.
  • To analyse human samples ex-vivo and perform / set-up in-vitro experiments to further
  • decode the process of biofilm building.
  • Cell and molecular biology analysis, Flow cytometry, Cytokine analysis, histology.
  • Animal work (animal surgery and sample harvesting and analysis).
  • Biobanking.

Your qualifications:

Degree in cellular / molecular biology / immunology (or comparable) with a scientific background and experimental experience in the following research areas:

  • Animal experimentation (animal experimentation diploma)
  • Cell culture, molecular and cell biology (qPCR, Western-Blot, ELISA, Multiplex analysis)
  • Flow cytometry analysis, histology
  • Biomaterials, stem cells, tissue engineering and regenerative medicine
  • Independent and self-motivated person, scientific creativity and originality, strong team spirit and collaborative capacity, strong writing skills.
  • Fluency in English.
