Patient-derived cancer xenografts (PDXs), developed by transplanting fragments of a patient’s tumour into immunodeficient mice, are increasingly recognised as clinically relevant preclinical models, particularly for the development of molecularly stratified therapies (see Byrne AT et al., Nat. Rev. Cancer 2017 for a review). Several small- to mid-scale collections of PDX models for multiple cancer pathologies have been established by academic laboratories across Europe, which are mostly exchanged through discrete material transfer agreements under collaborative studies. In addition, each research group has developed its own methodologies, with few comparative technical and methodological studies being available. Besides, efforts to standardise and harmonise study design, data analysis and reporting are also needed. As an initiative toward integration of PDX collections across European cancer centres and university hospitals, we established in 2013 the EurOPDX Consortium. The Consortium and other key academic and SME partners were awarded in 2017 a four year 5 million grant to build the EurOPDX Research Infrastructure, in order to organise the access to PDX models, expertise and resources of the EurOPDX Consortium to academic researchers and industry (European Union Horizon 2020 programme grant agreement #731105, EDIReX project, February 2018 – January 2022).
